Sample Configurations

Videoconferencing Types

The following sample configurations are intended as examples of some typical videoconferencing systems for specific applications. Variations in the exact set-up and equipment used for each system are possible.

Telecommuter and Traveling Salesperson System

The telecommuter and traveling salesperson are your best link to your customers. Theses individuals are on the front lines of your business. They constantly need access to information quickly and efficiently. They also need to capitalize on their pre-existing equipment and communication infrastructure. The best way to do this is by using a PC centric system that makes use of commonly available network topology. The ideal scenario is to have a network environment to make the connection through. Most telecommuters are connected to their corporate LAN directly, or through a broadband connection (DSL, ISDN or Cable Modem). Typically, traveling sales representatives, who stay at national hotel chains in major metro areas, have access to inexpensive broadband as provided by the hotel.

The great thing about these systems is that they all offer full features and are 100% compatible with the bigger systems typically installed in a corporate conference room. Each system provides standards based (h.323) voice and video, as well as applications sharing (t.120) and white-boarding through a Microsoft NetMeeting interface. They can be used with either a PC or laptop. Both systems featured below connect to the PC host through the USB port. You don’t even have to take your PC apart to make them work!

Desktop PC System for Individual Users

These days everybody has a PC on his or her desk and most are connected to the corporate LAN. Since you already have a PC, why not optimize it further by adding a videoconferencing system?

Desktop PC Setup

These systems are typically composed of software and a USB camera. Installation is straight forward and almost anyone with basic PC knowledge can do it quickly and efficiently. The good thing about these systems is that they are truly versatile. The video and audio will be provided by your PC, so you don’t need any additional equipment. You can do h.323 or h.264 conferencing over IP.

The featured product, Polycom PVX, gives you immediate access to all the resources on both your individual PC and your corporate LAN. You can incorporate presentations and files that reside anywhere on your LAN into your videoconference.

Small Group System for Up to 6 People

(Recommended for small businesses & remote field offices)Sony PCS-1 Videoconferencing System
Your group is working together on a project. There are too many people to crowd into your cubical, so you hit the hallway and head for the small conference room. This conference room is modest and its use is limited to inter-company working meetings only. You might consider adding a set-top videoconferencing system to the room to augment its capabilities.

We recommend set-top units deployed in these small conference rooms. They are extremely user friendly (even your vice-president could be trained to use them!). You will need a nice monitor (a 32" unit is just about right). The video will be displayed on the monitor, audio will come from the monitor speakers. In addition, they can be accessorized to optimize their functionality quickly and inexpensively. Polycom VSX-7000

Each system featured can be configured to run on an ISDN connection or over your corporate LAN. They provide standards compliant voice and video, as well as the ability to add additional input sources, like secondary cameras, document stands or external whiteboards. Through an available LAN connection, additional information can be presented.

Medium Multi-Point Conference Room System

(Recommended for medium businesses with multiple locations) Polycom ViewStation Videoconferencing System
The typical use for this type of system will be business meetings with corporate staff at multiple locations, as well as vendor and client meetings. A versatile videoconferencing system is required. We suggest a high-end set-top system that incorporates multi-point capabilities. These units are capable of multi-point calls in an ISDN environment. (128k for four (Polycom) or 6 (Sony) concurrent locations, total bandwidth required at head-end is 512/768k.) In addition, these units can make point-to-point IP based calls at up to 2M in an IP (LAN/WAN) environment.

You will need to accommodate between one and 20 people in this room. A nice table, chairs and cart for your conferencing system are necessities. Lights should also be considered (remember "Lights, Camera, Action!"). Video works best with the proper lighting.
